📊 This Week in AI Numbers

Despite a decline in online buzz, the AI sector continues to experience strong venture funding and GitHub activity.

  • German startup, Neura Robotics, raised a staggering $60+ million in new funding to build cognitive robots that can collaboratively work alongside humans.

🤯 See the impressive Neura Robotics humanoid video below…

  • 47 AI-focused companies raised over $600 million last week. The majority of funding went to B2B startups. The most common funding round was the ‘Seed’ stage, with an average check size of $13.5 million.

Notes:
The Nasdaq Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Index tracks the performance of companies engaged in the artificial intelligence and robotics segment. The index is up 28% YTD.
Green trend lines show a positive 6-month trend line for the metric.
Red trend lines show a negative 6-month trend line for the metric.

🗳️ Result From The Last Week’s Poll

Frankly, I was surprised by the results of this poll. I imagined far fewer people would be okay with an AI personal therapist.

 🤔 Question of The Week

Please vote to see the result in next week’s issue.

✍️ The Copilot Opinion (TCO) - OpenAI plans to launch G3PO as a response to Meta’s LLAMA 2 open-source model.

  • Zuck's move to open-source LLAMA 2 and giveaway commercial rights is bold, ambitious, and set to make performant AI accessible to all.

  • Even with fewer parameters, LLAMA 2 delivers a knockout performance, scoring a solid 68.9 MMLU, trailing just behind GPT 3.5's score of 70.0.

  • But it doesn't stop there. LLAMA 2 is leveraging the power of the Grouped-Query Attention (GQA) feature to slash operational costs and supercharge efficiency.

  • Now, OpenAI is under the gun. They need to retaliate with open-source models, innovative leaps, and broader collaborations or risk falling behind.

  • OpenAI is rumored to be working to release an open-source version of its LLM, codenamed G3PO.

  • The insider scoop is that G3PO is delayed because OpenAI is juggling several competing priorities - Plugin Appstore, iPhone, Android apps, Alignment team, etc.

Weekly Highlights

  • 50% of StackOverflow's traffic has dissipated due to AI tools like Copilot and ChatGPT providing quicker, more approachable answers.

  • OpenAI discontinued its AI classifier, designed to detect AI-generated content, due to poor accuracy.

  • ChatGPT was used to write the unfinished Game of Thrones books, showing proficiency in character continuity but struggling with unique, surprising literary decisions.

  • Apple is developing an AI chatbot, internally named "Apple GPT," as a step towards competing in the AI space currently led by OpenAI and Google.

  • Cybercriminals are selling stolen OpenAI credentials on the dark web and leveraging a malicious ChatGPT clone, WormGPT, to intensify phishing and business email compromise attacks.

  • Meta, Google, OpenAI, and four other tech giants have voluntarily committed to the White House to responsibly develop AI, investing in cybersecurity, conducting discrimination research, and introducing a watermarking system, even as U.S. lawmakers move toward AI regulation.

  • Kenyan contractors for OpenAI, tasked with moderating graphic content for ChatGPT, report severe psychological distress and call for protective legislation.

💰 A Product Idea Worth Considering - News In Your Personalized Style or Tone.

Every individual has a unique approach to consuming news.

Some enjoy a lighthearted, humorous angle, while others prefer a serious tone. Some want the facts delivered straight with an informational tone, while others just want a casual read.

So here is the idea → Simply pick your preferred news consumption style - humorous, serious, factual, etc. and the website will craft all your news stories in that style.

It's uncomplicated and fun.

Every time you visit the news site, all the news will be written for you in the tone of your choice.

Say farewell to the mundane, one-style-suits-all news approach.

63% of the people in the last week’s product poll wanted an email personal assistant. See last week’s issue for the product question.

🤯 Fun Fact of The Week

30 Trillion Tokens

Number of tokens X, Inc. (previously Twitter) should have in its data repository.

Why does it matter → Rumor has it that GPT-4 was trained on ~6 trillion tokens. Twitter has 5x that number of tokens to train its Large Language Model.

It is likely X will consume other sources of data to make sure all answers from the X chatbot don’t sound like a tweet ;)
